The cycos Media Server represents a cornerstone achievement in telecommunications technology, embodying over two decades of innovation and adaptation across multiple enterprise communication platforms. What began as a targeted solution has evolved into a mission-critical component powering diverse communication ecosystems worldwide.
Our journey began in 2005 when cycos was acquired by Siemens Enterprise Networks (SEN). Recognizing the need to modernize aging infrastructure, we developed an MGCP-enabled Media Server specifically for the HiPath 8000 platform. This initial implementation replaced legacy DSP hardware Media Servers, establishing the foundation for what would become a transformative technology.
Over the next two years, the Media Server underwent significant enhancements to support SIP, greatly expanding its capabilities and market reach. The Media Server team was entrusted with developing advanced features including Conferencing and VoicePortal solutions for Siemens' OpenScape UC platform, positioning cycos as a key technology provider in the unified communications space.

When Siemens divested its communication division, creating Unify, the Media Server found new purpose in powering Circuit, Unify's groundbreaking cloud-based collaboration solution. As a core media handling engine, it managed audio streams, conferencing capabilities, and session control across both SIP and WebRTC endpoints.
Pioneering WebRTC Implementation
The cycos Media Server distinguished itself as among the first enterprise-grade implementations of WebRTC technology, enabling seamless browser-based voice and video communication without requiring plugins. In the Circuit environment, it delivered:
This implementation set new benchmarks for cloud-native unified communications platforms and demonstrated cycos's commitment to cutting-edge technology adoption.
Following Unify's integration into the Atos Group, the Media Server found its most critical application yet: powering Atos' next-generation Emergency Communications solution (NG911 and NG112).
Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP)
In emergency communication environments, the Media Server functions as a vital bridge connecting traditional SIP connections to modern WebRTC clients within PSAP Call Centers. This capability ensures that emergency responders can communicate effectively using the most appropriate technology for their specific needs.
Emergency Services IP Network (ESInet)
The Media Server serves as a Media Stream Border Function (MSBF) within ESInet infrastructure, where reliability is paramount. In this role, it ensures the secure and reliable transfer of all communication streams—voice, video, and text—between carrier networks, ESInet infrastructure, and PSAP facilities.
The evolution of the cycos Media Server from a hardware replacement solution to a cornerstone of emergency communications infrastructure demonstrates our commitment to technical excellence and adaptability. Each phase of development has built upon previous innovations while addressing the evolving needs of enterprise and public safety communications.

Today, the Media Server continues to exemplify cycos's engineering expertise, powering communication systems where failure is not an option and where lives may depend on reliable, real-time media processing capabilities.
